Monotube Gas-Pressure Suspension — Engineered in Germany Since 1873

Bilstein was founded in 1873 by August Bilstein in Ennepetal, Germany, where it began making metal window hardware. It entered the automotive industry in 1927 and, in 1954, industrialized French researcher Bourcier de Carbon's work to develop a production process for the monotube gas-pressure shock absorber — supplying the world's first series-production monotube gas dampers to Mercedes-Benz in 1957. Since then Bilstein has been an original-equipment partner to Aston Martin, Audi, BMW, Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lotus, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru and Volkswagen, and its monotube design is proven from the street to Baja and the racetrack. Its North American operation, thyssenkrupp Bilstein of America, is based in Hamilton, Ohio.
